My baking habit got kicked into full gear this week. The bento itself was fairly traditional and things I’ve made in the past, but the dessert: that’s where this week’s bento really shines. I made a full on layered mini dessert (I think it’s called a petit four, but I’m not positive about that).

I’m going to start with the savory food for consistency. I started off with quick salmon rice balls. I baked the salmon and just mix it into the rice before forming the balls rather than stuffing it in the middle. I also found these adorable pre-cut nori. It’s shaped into paws and cats and other adorable shapes. I also made octopus shaped sausages, boiled edamame, and lotus root chips (love these).

Now the dessert. This is where this lunch really shined this week. I made a layered dessert with 4 layers. I even got a special square silicone mold to make these. So first I made the strawberry cake and cut it into small squares. Then I made the custard and let it cool. Finally I made the lemon curd. Once everything was cool, I tempered the chocolate and filled the mold. I then added custard, lemon curd, and a cake square before covering the bottom with more tempered chocolate. I froze them again before unmolding it all.

Some of the layered desserts broke when i was unmolding them, but most came out fine and looked AMAZING! They were incredible to cut into and see all the layers, but they are a lot of work. So if you really feel like baking I recommend this idea.
