McDonald's Theme with a Twist
So in this week’s lunch, I was trying to be a bit cheeky. I’m not sure how successful I was though. Overall I think I like the effect, but I’m not sure this is one I would want to repeat. It was a lot of work with very little pay off in the end.
So my idea was ‘McDonald’s’ chicken ‘fries’ and sweet ‘potato’ nuggets with buffalo sauce. Get it? It’s the opposite of what you would actually order. I appreciate the reversal, but in showing it off, I don’t think it resonated as much, so it doesn’t hurt my feelings if you don’t like it the idea either.
But the food was actually pretty delicious. The chicken ‘fries’, were made fairly simply. First I cut chicken breasts into strips, then did a flour-egg-panko breading before baking them in the oven. I served these with a cheese ‘fry box’ complete with the iconic McDonald’s M. I ate these with buffalo sauce because it’s my absolute favorite condiment. They would taste great with ketchup, bbq sauce, or even honey mustard too though.
The sweet potato nuggets were significantly more work though. First, I boiled sweet potatoes and mashed them with egg, flour, salt, pepper, garlic powder, and cayenne pepper. I cooled the sweet potatoes down in the freezer until they were quite cold. Then I formed them into patties and added more flour to the outside before lightly frying them in a skillet. They were delicious, but hard to work with. Several broke when trying to flip them and the breadcrumbs sometimes burnt before the nugget was cooked all the way through. They were tasty though.
I needed to have veggies but wasn’t sure what to make. I mean it’s not like McDonald’s serves sides of veggies for me to play off of. So, I just stuck with my favorite of the veggies, boiled edamame.
For dessert, I decided to practice my baking skills a bit and make mini treacle tarts. I made a shortbread crust for the tarts and a filling made mostly of molasses and breadcrumbs. Personally, I prefer when the filling contains more golden syrup than molasses but couldn’t find it at the store. I’ll have to search for it harder next time. Even still, I hadn’t had a treacle tart in a while, so it was a nice treat.
Well that’s it for this week’s lunch. Wish more people appreciated my cheekiness, lol.
